Colaba Posted August 25, 2025 Report Posted August 25, 2025 I can't understand why there's so much hate toward Minecraft, specialy in reddit. Besides the fact that VS and Minecraft are completely different games, targeting different audiences, with different themes and goals, The only things they really share are blocks and graphics. What people seem to forget is that Minecraft, at least in my opinion, paved the way for two of the best games ever made: Factorio and Vintage Story. In the end, and keeping things in perspective, it's like dismissing Newtonian physics just because Quantum Mechanics and Relativity were developed. All three can reach the same audiences, but for different purposes... Let’s just have fun (and I have it in VS AND factorio). 1 2
Echo Weaver Posted August 25, 2025 Report Posted August 25, 2025 I generally think that stuff is just because folks like to get together and hate stuff. I played Minecraft for a long time. I might go back to it. The mood is very different from VS. 7
ArtGnat Posted August 25, 2025 Report Posted August 25, 2025 (edited) I don't see the full on hate too often (I'm not on the reddit all the time), but I do always see the sentiments even from the friends I play with that VS is better/objectively better Minecraft (Which maybe that's the type of Hate your talking about). and I can get where they are coming from, but it can bother me sometimes. cuz I don't have a problem with people liking VS more than Minecraft or thinking it's a better fit for what they want. VS is likely giving them the experience they wish Minecraft could be and I get that. but since Minecraft isn't trying to be the same experience I just don't like it when people will blanket say VS is Better than Minecraft like it's a Fact that is true for everyone. People can still have their opinions and criticize Minecraft for what it is trying to do and criticize Microsoft/Mojang for their decisions. and I think it can be fair to compare certain parts of both block games, but when doing that they still need to consider that both games are serving two different play styles/ethos. I think a lot of what I'm talking about to, with the "VS Objectively better than Minecraft" statements can come from personal built up frustration/resentment. because some of those people did enjoy the early days of Minecraft but as it got more updates and it became more clear that Minecraft isn't really going to focus certain genres/playstyles and instead be more of jack of all trades sandbox of tools/elements that you on your end can then do what you want with. which does leave in the base game to have just little things in every direction of gameplay. Those people became frustrated/sad over time because they wanted Minecraft to add/ lean more into the type of genres/gameplay that they like. Like there's a section of the Minecraft community that wants the game to be more RPG like and have a bunch of Bosses like Terraria, there are people that want more comprehensive survival mechanics/progression and just survival challenges. Those latter half of people that eventually came across Vintage Story which they realized is almost exactly how they wish Minecraft would be. and those feeling of joy and "Finally! a block game that focuses on the gameplay I want!" can transform/result in them having the "VS Objectively better than Minecraft" sentiments. also sometimes the Minecraft hate/negative comparisons can be a reaction to how some outsider minecraft players will stumble upon some VS media and just leave negative comments towards VS purely because it looks like Minecraft, and they don't know what VS is and they don't want to see it in their media timeline and or just want to be an jerk to make themselves feel better. So I'm sure that can be annoying (which it is, I also don't like those negative nothing burger comments on VS) So it's tough, since I can see how/why they might be thinking like this, but it still bothers me/makes me a lil sad as a Big enjoyer of Both Minecraft and Vintage Story. SodaRKov Posted August 25, 2025 Report Posted August 25, 2025 As long as something exists, there will always be people who hate it, for one reason or another ...and reddit itself is a moderately toxic place (or maybe I'm just unlucky with what I come across there ¯\_(ツ)_/¯) 1

A lot of people will make comparisons between MC and VS simply on visuals, and make assumptions about what VS is as a game based purely on that. I'm sure it gets old fast for anyone actually playing VS and knowing that similarities are largely superficial*. * There are definitely deeper similarities, but they have more to do with how the game functions under the hood than how the game plays, if that makes sense. 2

I think this is probably where the majority of the frustrations come from...that, and the whole comparison being somewhat of a meme in the VS community. When it's popular to dunk on something, it's not unusual for several people to jump on the dunking bandwagon, regardless of whether or not they actually dislike the thing in question. As for which game is better...that really depends on what one is looking for in regards to gameplay. Vintage Story holds the advantage if one wants a proper story, more challenges, and grittier enemies/more realistic setting in general. Minecraft is better if one is looking for a more laid-back experience with a more whimsical nature, as well as a wider range of building styles to pick from. Not that Vintage Story doesn't support multiple styles, but the overall aesthetics of VS heavily favor realistic medieval-style builds, and not so much modern, fantasy, or other styles that aren't medieval. 2 hours ago, ArtGnat said: also sometimes the Minecraft hate/negative comparisons can be a reaction to how some outsider minecraft players will stumble upon some VS media and just leave negative comments towards VS purely because it looks like Minecraft, and they don't know what VS is and they don't want to see it in their media timeline and or just want to be an jerk to make themselves feel better. I might be a grumpy veteran by saying this, but I think some of it also stems from Minecraft players jumping into Vintage Story expecting the same kind of gameplay but with fancier graphics, learning rather quickly that the gameplay is very different from Minecraft, and then insisting that Vintage Story change various mechanics to be more like Minecraft. 7

Dilan Rona Posted August 27, 2025 Report Posted August 27, 2025 Minecraft may be the grandfather of all games block. But since M$ bought it, and the existance of bedrock especially, and what is happening to that marketplace compared to how java is treated, its just one thing. That I will not dig into. Second, Vintage Story imho is far superior to anything minecraft can come up with in its wildest wet dream. That we will never see with the way M$ is trying to eliminate drops from any new mob it brings in, and that they are trying to kid proof. 1
LordMoneyNew Posted 20 hours ago Report Posted 20 hours ago For myself specifically I can not go back to playing Minecraft. Any drive I had for minecraft has fully been replaced by VintageStory. Now for hate, I believe a lot of people who have now played VS dislike minecraft for two reasons. The Minecraft development compared to VS development is heavily lacking, shallow, and so minimal it really feels like the minecraft devs really do not care about the full community anymore. Everything is being targeted towards young children, which is baffling because the main minecraft community is between 15-30 years of age. So marketing the game more towards 6-8 year olds does not make sense to the community. But the Main Hate comes directly at Microsoft. The game is being dragged down by microsoft into a money farming slop machine. They are making bedrock worse and worse each update adding far more bugs to the game that they constantly state will never be fixed. The list of game breaking bugs in bedrock that they have marked as low priority is absolutely wild in the volume. Hardcore was added to the game but spontaneous death was never fixed. So a large case for hardcore players losing their worlds is randomly dying while doing nothing. The other thing is coming this August Java is getting an engine update that will make it that every mod for Java that isn't a basic texture pack, will no longer work. This is being rolled out along with the Java Marketplace, so all free mods will be broken, but now a pay for mod place will be open. The EULA was changed two months ago giving Microsoft and Mojang express permission to read you files, and if any unrecognized or modified files are found they have permission to prevent your game from launching. They say this is to prevent cheaters, except it in no way affects most cheat engines, all it does is allow them to stop you from using free mods by adding it to your game files or running a mod launcher. So the fact that they have set up permission to stop your game from launching free mods not on the marketplace, ahead of them adding a new update that will break all free mods while also adding a new marketplace, shows such a deep level of corruption in the company that I can fully understand why people Hate on Minecraft. I mean Minecraft's own social media pages mostly post about new addons that are often stolen or terribly optimized, instead of actually talking about what work they are doing Compare that with the VS dev team, who are openly transparent and happy to hear community feedback as well as continuing their own vision of the game, and the contrast is too great. My Nephew loves playing minecraft, and I play with him because he wants me to. But personally I am really not having a good time with the game, only enjoying entertaining my nephew before he gets too bored after 30min of playing minecraft. 2
Rainbow Fresh Posted 11 hours ago Report Posted 11 hours ago Minecraft is a good game. And when I say that I want to put emphasis on "Minecraft" is a good game. Not Minecraft Bedslop (for PC). Not Minecraft Realms. Not Minecraft marketplace. Not whatever money-printing nonesense they thought up now. Good old Minecraft Java under the creative direction of Notch and Mojang. It's an inperformant piece of shit that somehow runs worse with every single update to the point it became unplayable at 60FPS vanilla without OptiFine since, like, 1.16 and some of their decisions for new content are questionable at best, underwhelming at worst. But at its core it's still a great game that has given me quite possibly thousands of hours of fun over the last decade and which I'll occasionally come back to every couple years, when the last burnout has subsided. As will be the case with Vintage Story too, or any other similar endless open world sandbox building game. You play it to exhaustion, then give it a year or two of a break. And following this pattern, once I finally grow truly exhausted of my current playthrough, I will most certainly return to Minecraft sooner than Vintage Story. Because they are two different games with two different goals and playstyles - one is a cozy building simulator with beautiful landscapes, one is a challenging survival game with cool building options. One has infinite amounts of mods to turn it into literally any other game, one has a bunch of mods to enrich the native vision of progression. Now I didn't know about the current developments at Microslop HQ about finally killing the Java edition in favor of their broken, duct tape addicted money machine - but that doesn't matter in the long run. Mismanagement of future game development doesn't change what the game was before. All that's going to happen; unless they truly learned from Nintendo now - is that, much like with the 1.12+ mod boycott, mods will stay on the last sane version. People will stay on the last sane version because of the mods; because no major game update can rival the power of 150+ mods modpacks. Not to mention, usually cool vanilla features get back ported by mods. And as such it still stands same as before that Minecraft is a great game and it's not Vintage Story, much like Vintage Story isn't Minecraft and you can very much play and enjoy both. If Vintage Story is exactly what you always wanted Minecraft to be and you have no other motivations then sure, so be it. But for others both can exist and both can be enjoyed for different reasons. So no, I'll join camp "There is no point in hating Minecraft over Vintage Story and Vintage Story is not the de-facto objectively better Minecraft". It is a different version of Minecraft going in a different direction being it's own game in the process. And just as a post scriptum: 9 hours ago, LordMoneyNew said: Compare that with the VS dev team, who are openly transparent and happy to hear community feedback as well as continuing their own vision of the game, and the contrast is too great. Vintage Story's game development certainly feels better than Microsoft's abuse. That is for sure. But then again, from my perspective as a new player who only joined the bandwagon earlier this year - Vintage Story's development took 10 years to only get this far and the last couple updates seem to have broken quite a few things aswell that don't seem to get fixed with any sort of urgency they'd demand much like Bedrock. It's obviously rude to compare them like this but the notions, if on a generally higher quality level, are still present. So I wouldn't go so far out of my to as to hold protest signs of "Microsoft sucks, Tyron is the best". Game development is hard no matter the size of the team, even though the limiting factor for small teams is usually time and resources while for big teams it's usually saving all the time and not spending any resources to make more money.
Rezerkity Posted 6 hours ago Report Posted 6 hours ago I usually just see jest here and there or jabs at each other. Vintage Story is intrinsically tied to Minecraft and cannot escape that - it started as a mod, became a standalone title, they're in roughly the same genre, and Minecraft is one of the most popular games of all time, so naturally Vintage Story will be compared, and vice versa. Vintage Story's updates are much slower but much more impactful as the game is still finding its feet with base game mechanics, such as the fishing rework, changes to core mechanics like berry bushes and smithing, world generation changes etc. Minecraft is a mostly feature complete game and just gets touchups to existing mechanics and QOL, and sometimes new stuff to play with, and the corporate side has made these updates quarterly. You'll see hate sure, but that's always going to exist. Hate always exists in any fandom or community. Just don't internalise them as speaking for everyone, and remember that generally they're a minority. Everyone else is busy having fun creating and playing.
Echo Weaver Posted 4 hours ago Report Posted 4 hours ago I have been going back to Minecraft recently. It's fun. It's a lot more sandboxy because it doesn't have a storyline the way VS does. You really can make Minecraft anything you want it to be. Vintage Story is a much better version of what I used to mod Minecraft into. It also has something you almost never find outside of indie games -- a long term unified vision. It's telling a sophisticated story, and I am confident that they're going to keep on telling it. I also love that each mechanics release refines existing mechanics as much as it adds new ones. And that modding is explicitly supported. And and and.
Zaph42nd Posted 3 hours ago Report Posted 3 hours ago For me Minecraft and Vintage Story appeal to very different niches, in some ways the whole VS vs MC debate reminds me a lot of how Terraria historically has been compared to Minecraft, both different games and sharing only perhaps surface-level traits. That said, I find myself preferring VS for its survival and challenge, MC for its breadth of mods and sandbox feel, leading me to flip-flop between the games from time to time depending on my mood and what I'm actually going for gameplay wise (that isn't to say VS can't be a sandbox for large-scale builds, just that its "thesis" is very much focused on survival gameplay first whereas MC markets itself as a sandbox)

I think the main reason for this with VS updates is simply that...the devs like to push the limits and try to outdo themselves every update when it comes to content. There's also the fact that Vintage Story is still very much a game in the alpha development cycle, maybe beta, which is rather easy to forget since many parts are quite polished compared to what a game's alpha/beta phase usually offers. That's not to say there weren't some things that could have been handled a little better, but a lot of it I just chalk up to general growing pains of a game very early in development. In my experience, the VS devs are pretty fast about fixing the major issues while still getting new content out, so I'm not particularly worried about it.

As a software developer myself let me explain how alpha/beta/release works. Things are in alpha until all the features are complete. Then in beta while they fine-tune the original base product. Then once released, maintenance updates are made to provide additional content, tweaks, etc. Only a skeleton crew works on the game at this point. The team diverts most of the resources into other projects. VS is still very much still in alpha. The team is still working on the underlying systems, changing things, scrapping other, absorbing mods into the base game and fleshing out the features on the roadmap. And adding whatever Saraty wants. like shelves.

Vintage Story's goal is for each release to be a game that is playable for itself. Each release, like Minecraft releases or expansions in games with that structure, build on the game to add more playable content. A plan that includes future releases to expand content does not make a game perpetually in alpha. Otherwise, Minecraft is also in alpha, and that's silly. VS release candidates cover at least the alpha phase, and I'd argue they cover the beta phase too. The releases are production releases, followed by the expected bugfix releases. The primary difference between Minecraft and Vintage Story on this axis is that VS is going in a specific direction with each release. Edited 4 minutes ago by Echo Weaver
