CigsAndHam Posted September 27, 2025 Report Posted September 27, 2025 I dont have arachnaphobia or anything like that, but it's something about locusts, how they spawn/sound/crawl that really activates my "Yuck" meter. Shivers are sort of the same way but dont give off quite the same feeling as locusts. I can still cleave my way through them but I'm surprised by the weird signals my brain gives off when I see them haha. Anyone else experience that at all? Makes exploring caves interesting for sure. 2 1
LadyWYT Posted September 27, 2025 Report Posted September 27, 2025 (edited) Not particularly--the drifters, shivers, and bowtorn are more disturbing to me. The locusts themselves are actually pretty cute, in my opinion, especially with the blinky light and little buzzing noise they make. That being said, I don't appreciate them trying to remove my face, so I do my Blackguard duty and squash them when I find them. Edited September 27, 2025 by LadyWYT
CigsAndHam Posted September 27, 2025 Author Report Posted September 27, 2025 I feel you with the sounds. With headphones, immediately hearing the raspy breathing of bow-torn and shiver while in a cave is quite unnerving. 1
Zane Mordien Posted September 27, 2025 Report Posted September 27, 2025 The crickets bother me more than the monsters. They sound like rattlesnakes to me, which triggers signals in my brain. 1

Same here. I think it's the movement plus the proportional size that creates the revulsion. Even a tiny spider in real life moving like that would be disturbing albeit non-threatening. The developers played an ace with that animation. 1
Dilan Rona Posted October 1, 2025 Report Posted October 1, 2025 Early on for me, if I saw a sawblade locust I'd tuck tail, and jackrabbit out of the area asap. Now? I tackle them head on. With whatever weapon I have if I dont have spears.

I was running from a bear and then thought to myself: "ok, I barely escaped alive and now I'll have to deal with that snake hidden somewhere." Edited October 1, 2025 by byo13 1 1

I love spiders irl but those locusts are "off" just enough that seeing them in game makes my skin crawl. Kudos and hats off to the devs for pouring so much love into making the VS world such a wonderfully vibrant representation of Lovecraftian horror. 4
Broccoli Clock Posted October 4, 2025 Report Posted October 4, 2025 If I was going to name the creepiest mob, it'd be the shiver, or bizarrely the bell. The shiver's reason is easy: the way it looks, the way it sounds, and the way it moves. I don't have any issue with the locusts, and I don't have any particular arachnophobia (although I wouldn't pick up a spider - and I'm in a country that doesn't have any venomous ones). Other than their swarming mechanism, and the numbers that can appear in, they seem fairly easy to kill, especially with a decent spear. The bell is creepy for another reason, it's actually closer to Lovecraftian horror than other mobs, imo, his shtick was all about the horror of the mundane. A "possessed" bell, calling out your presence, coupled with that sound, it's more a surrealist fear than an actual phobia. 3
Echo Weaver Posted October 4, 2025 Report Posted October 4, 2025 I'm also in the shiver-is-creepiest camp. Locusts mostly affect me in that so many can swarm at you at once. I am not deeply creeped out by bells, but when I was playing with my teen and we triggered one, she completely panicked. She was the one who found and killed it, but she insisted afterward that I mod them out. (I haven't done so. I'm hoping she'll be emotionally prepared when we hit another.) 1

Given that the lore behind them states they were originally a safety/communication device that were especially beloved by miners, since bells could sound an alarm in the event of a cave-in and help rescue crews find the trapped miners faster, just makes bells that much creepier. According to the wiki, they're also attracted to bright lights like lanterns, so while they do move slow, it's not really possible to go entirely unnoticed by the things. In any case, sure, they've been corrupted by the same force that corrupted the other automatons, but a lot of what they do is just...their original job, in a very twisted fashion. 2

Thorfinn Posted October 5, 2025 Report Posted October 5, 2025 "Anyone else skeeved out by locusts?" No, but a little by your avatar. Beetlejuice, right? 1

Was trying to put down ladders to explore a high-iron cave but went too low and dropped 40 blocks. Immediately a bell started ringing and scared the crap out of me. Not fun.
