EnbyKaiju Posted February 17 Report Posted February 17 Let's have a little positive hypothetical time here with a simple question, you can be as detailed in your answer as you want. If you could build anything, at any scale, in Vintage Story, be it a singular thing or a massive-spanning endeavor, what would it be? Could be something you've tried building in the past but don't feel you got right, or something you haven't been brave enough to tackle, or just something you're waiting for the right gameplay includes to make a possibility? I'll start with mine, because I hardly keep it a secret. Full scale Edo period Japanese castle town that represents different levels of social development as it works out further from the Castle, all the way to an Ainu village in the outskirts. All I'm waiting for now is the waterwheels in the new update.
LadyWYT Posted February 17 Report Posted February 17 A full-fledged castle, with perhaps a small village to go with it. That, and a cathedral perhaps, as well as a museum and several large sculptures/wall carvings in general. I've taken stabs at some of them but not really had a world last long enough yet for me to really get into finishing one. A proper fortress though is my main goal. I think what tends to trip me up the most is building scale; that is, my mind is still trying to design builds on Minecraft scale, which can work in Vintage Story but isn't the most ideal in many cases. Vintage Story lends itself a little better to building on a smaller scale, both due to the chisel system and difficulty of acquiring some resources. The decorative items also make it easier to flesh out smaller structures, whereas Minecraft doesn't really have many options for small scale decoration, hence why it's better to build on a larger scale there. 3
vinnland Posted February 17 Report Posted February 17 I want to build the town I lived in for 6 years after leaving university, or at least a portion of it. But I want to do it in normal mode, not creative. Maybe when I retire lol. 2

A great idea for a build, one of the true classics of the genre that VS really feels designed for. And I absolutely agree with the sentiment of scale. VS allows you to actually build smaller scale but highly detailed, vs Minecraft where you really need to start working big to get the detail in. I think it helps a lot that if you can't find the kind of decoration you want in VS you can just make it yourself. I hope we get to see it someday! 1

Bring a piece of what's special about where you came from to the world of VS. I hope when you get around to it you'll share it with us. 2
Nathan Flaminio Posted February 17 Report Posted February 17 The Epcot Center ball with a working rollercoaster, lol 1
Shoom Posted February 17 Report Posted February 17 (edited) I want to build a underground sea underneath my town, I'm picturing something like 500 blocks in diameter, maybe 30-40 blocks from ceiling to bottom. I'm picturing dimly lit islands, in a ghostly, forever dark sea that you can sail in-between, inspired by the game Sunless Sea. I've started mining, it's something I do on and off, but the sheer amount of rock that needs to be quarried is ridiculous, it will likely take me years of on and off mining just to get the cave done, then it needs to be filled with water and smaller builds as well, an overwhelming amount of work for a build that's hidden underground. I don't know if it's something I'll ever be able to finish, but I think it would make for an amazing build if actually completed, cave-diving and sailing are two of my most favorite things in Vintage Story, combining the two would be awesome. Definitely waiting for VS to implement minecarts or go for mods to make that happen, but I'd love to see it become a reality. 2

Ohhh, getting big Sunless Sea vibes from this and I love it, especially with all the mobs that would spawn in a situation like that making the darkness & depth of it all feeling that much more atmospheric. There's definitely enough depth to the world, but you're right about the sheer amount of effort required to make it happen in survival. I am 100% on board to seeing you make that one happen, because it sounds amazing. 1
7embre Posted February 17 Report Posted February 17 Being a creative builder for the most part, I'd say my dream build would be a massive cliffside city on the shore, similar to Amalfi, Italy. But with architecture that goes a little bit to the north. I already have a brief idea in mind for it. Essentially to build a city to fit the cathedral I still cannot freaking finish in it. For survival side of thing, I think the castle with a little village surrounding it would suffice, pretty similar to what @LadyWYT said. I might tackle that project at some point. Honestly I've seen a lot of TOBG conquest builder's content in the last week (not necessarily new one, it just happened to get into my recommendation feed) — it allows to make some really pretty interior and exterior stuff which translate into VS very good, so it really got me inspired in the wrong direction, given that I really want to finish and release my cathedral build to the public. Working on a single build for almost a year is no joke lol 1
RationallyParanoid Posted February 18 Report Posted February 18 As a millennial struggling to gain footing in the housing market, my dream home Jokes aside, I'd love to build some of the key locations my players have visited in my DnD Homebrew world. So much cool/outlandish architecture *sighs* 1

Grummsh Posted February 18 Report Posted February 18 what Thofinn said... //media.invisioncic.com/r268468/emoticons/biggrin.png but for realy if i only had the time and patience for sure something epic from Lotr - Rivendell or Minas Tirith. And for something more easily achievable a city carved into a mountain side with a giant temple - orient vibe - something inspired by Petra. Ohh and one more thing came to my mind //media.invisioncic.com/r268468/emoticons/biggrin.png A pirate cove with a tavern a dock and a pirate ship 1

VS is perfectly designed for both and after the RubixRaptor Ren series that's even more in my mind. If you ever settle on one of them, I hope you'll share your epic journey! 1
Arasine Posted February 20 Report Posted February 20 I always end up spending more time building and 'dressing up' my road networks than I do building the places I live and work in VS. Little shrines at picturesque spots, bridges with chiselled details, tunnels through high ground must all be fully lit and supported inside. I would love to join the furthest north to the deepest south with well kept roads... But obviously this would take a lifetime irl ! 2

I mean...a dream build of connecting the north pole to the equator is one hell of a dream build! The ultimate highway builder. I'm totally on board with that dream, and I hope you reach it one day, even if you have to tunnel through every mountain for 100k blocks! 1
Broccoli Clock Posted February 21 Report Posted February 21 My dream build is a world away from a mega build. Quite the opposite, in fact, as I yearn for very compact but well decorated small footprint homes. While some people are out there with 256x stack sizes, building massive defensive walls and impressive roadways and networks to support them. Don't get me wrong, I totally appreciate the time/effort put in, but in my mind there is no need for them in a world where mobs don't need to be defended against. Hidden, sure, but not defended against, which makes those sorts of mega builds feel a bit hollow. If someone was to ask me what I'd like to build given no time/resource issues, then it'd be a very tight area, heavily decorated with lore content like pictures, rugs and accoutrements, with complex chiselling. I'd say that my builds tend to not increase in footprint over time, if anything reducing. Give me a couthie garden over a massive structure any day... 1 1

I've always been a real fan of how Vintage Story can pack so much detail into a small space, something most survival/crafting games aren't able to do with their mechanical constraints, but this is just wonderful! I'm also on team hyper-detailed if I can make it work, and you really do. If anything the lore content for VS demonstrates the value of small detail and small builds, so you're building in the tiny footprints of the devs themselves! Whatever you end up making, I hope it brings you joy. 1
Teh Pizza Lady Posted February 21 Report Posted February 21 my dream build? Given enough time, resources, and mods to make certain things function the way I want... It's a tossup between Harlech Castle and Wollaton Hall. Macbeth (1971) was filmed at Harlech Castle and Wollaton Hall was used as Wayne Manor in the Dark Knight Batman trilogy. If I could fit both of them into the same build, I would be happy. 1

Okay, this sounds incredible, those are both incredible buildings that would translate amazingly into VS, but also leaves me with a question. Would you also include the bat cave under Wallaton Hall? Just to give it the full Dark Knight vibe?

I would have to build it on a naturally occurring cave system that could be made into a bat cave, but for the most part, I would just enjoy the manor/hall itself. 1

Minus a bat cave underneath. And spoofed Assassin's Creed somewhat in the process. 1

Broccoli Clock Posted February 22 Report Posted February 22 If anyone is looking for an easy real world template for a big build they could do worse than have a crack at Marischal College, in Aberdeen (Scotland). The area is known for its granite, which takes a long time to weather and, although a hard stone, can be shaped into square blocks. Along with the link above, I'll add in an image into a spoiler. Spoiler With its angular design, and lack of weathering, the building is almost made for a VS "template" build. 2
