alejandro pascolo Posted June 23 Report Posted June 23 How can I prevent drifters from appearing in my shelter during a temporal storm? If that's not possible, how do I survive them?
Nathan Flaminio Posted June 23 Report Posted June 23 You can not. Surround yourself in a very small walled area, just big enough for a bed, and sleep or sit if you don't want to fight.
LadyWYT Posted June 23 Report Posted June 23 Welcome to the forums and game! 3 hours ago, alejandro pascolo said: How can I prevent drifters from appearing in my shelter during a temporal storm? Unfortunately there's no absolutely foolproof way to stop them from spawning, outside of turning off temporal storms entirely or otherwise using a mod to force monsters to only spawn underground...which most mods that tamper with monster spawns seem to be outdated. 3 hours ago, alejandro pascolo said: If that's not possible, how do I survive them? Building a small bunker to hide in can help, and if you have sleeping through storms enabled then you can sleep in a bed to bypass the temporal storm. Monsters tend not to spawn right on top of the player and also tend to prefer more open spaces as well, so small rooms with a lot of clutter(chests, shelves, rugs on the floor) tend to be quite safe, if a little cramped. If you sleep through the storm, the monsters also won't really have time to spawn. The main drawback to the bunker strategy though is that if an enemy is outside the door, you may need to fight your way out when it's time to leave the bunker. A different strategy for remaining indoors during a storm is to stay in a larger room; the room in this case should be big enough that you can move around comfortably so that you can easily fight a monster if one happens to spawn in the room with you. It's also a good idea to have at least two different doors to the room as well, so that you can escape to a different part of the interior or even escape outside should you need to. If you're going to fight through the storm, make sure you have a safe interior space to retreat to so you can heal, get a snack, and otherwise recover as needed before heading back into the onslaught.
Steel General Posted June 24 Report Posted June 24 I have found that a 2x2 hallway lined with slabs to leave only a 1x2 of half-blocks down the center to be safe from spawning in storms. I've been making a safe spot by digging down into stone then tunneling 2x2 ~50 blocks away, then lining that tunnel with slabs except where I came down on a ladder - by waiting out storms at the end of the tunnel I keep spawning away from my home, to which I run back and climb up into at storm's end. 1
Rainbow Fresh Posted June 24 Report Posted June 24 You prevent monsters from spawning on your head during temporal storms by installing a mod that removes monsters' ability to spawn on your head during temporal storms because it is an ass mechanic. https://mods.vintagestory.at/weatherthestormshelter 1 1
Hanril Posted June 24 Report Posted June 24 As for surviving, killing drifters restores a portion of your stability, preventing stronger ones from spawning. There will be tier 2-3 monsters spawning anyway, so if you're not ready to go full doom guy and Jonas their parts, bunker up in a 1by2 with a torch and no ventilation.
Phillip Susi Posted June 25 Report Posted June 25 (edited) What the hell? I thought they wouldn't spawn in your house if it was well lit. I'm two years into my world now and so far I have only occasionally emerged from my cellar to find one had spawned during the storm on the main floor, and the last several storms that didn't even happen when I started spamming more torches during the storm. Now I just went to sleep and woke up in the middle of a storm ( normally I wake up right when the storm starts so I can run down to the cellar ) with a deep bowtorn in my house, and the second I killed that, 3 drifters jumped me. They were also all flickering and glitchy looking, like they were phasing through the walls or something. Edited June 25 by Phillip Susi

There is only one reliable in-game way to do this - https://wiki.vintagestory.at/Rift_ward All other methods are either sledge-hammer in nature (removing all monsters) or only partially effective (small well lit rooms with no spawn space are mostly still not spawn proof). Unfortunately, a Rift Ward has these drawbacks: Late game Very expensive Only covers a limited area Noisy EDIT: Even it is not totally secure! Just checked the Wiki and it says "There is a 2.5% chance of failing to block a rift." Still, if you want one secure "bunker", then it might be your best bet. 1) Build your bunker Maybe a little distance from your main base, if you don't want the noise. 2) Switch to Creative. Give yourself Rift Ward materials and Temporal Gears for fuel. 3) Build and fuel it up before a Temporal Storm approaches. Bonus points: Give yourself some activities to do, such as panning or forging. When a storm comes, cower inside in safety. I regard this cheat as "fair play," as I regard it as unfair by the game that you can't spawn proof even a small area. (Besides, you'll still be installing mods anyway for better room detection, light detection etc.) Thanks, Professor Dragon Disclaimer: I've been away a while. So I hope this information is still current. I'm planning on doing a download of the latest update an building a world, so I may get to test this out. Edited June 25 by Professor Dragon

The rift ward will stop rifts from spawning in an area, but to my knowledge it won't stop a temporal storm from spawning monsters in said area, since temporal storms are essentially an event that ignores the typical spawn rules. 1

Thanks @LadyWYT, I was afraid of something like that. This is one feature request (being able to disable monster spawns inside a nominated safe space) that I wish would be included as an option. Demoncyborg Posted June 25 Report Posted June 25 my personal completely foolproof method is chiseling myself a 'corridor'. 2 or 3 blocks in a line, 2 tall, you can hollow it out with a chisel and sit within the center of the blocks and put a door on the front. I call it the panic closet, since it's cramped like one. I've never had a drifter spawn WITHIN a chiseled block with this method. I've never had drifters be able to hurt me through the thin walls of the panic box, and if you use a sleek door or some glass, you can observe outside the panic box to see if it's safe to leave. 1
0gladih Posted June 26 Report Posted June 26 Hello, here goes my 2 cents: - Find a pond/lake close to your base. The distance should be short (to flee into it when the time comes). - Make a 3x1 room, the back tile should be water (on the pond), one tile free, the front tile with a door. In the beginning, the door can be a double-wattle fence (one on top of the other). - The room has to be 3 tiles high, in the ceiling, you should have space to put a reed chest and a torch when you get in. - In the reed chest, put some gravel/sand/bony soil and a wooden pan. - When the time comes, eat until full (panning gets you hungry), go to the room, get into the water tile, put a panneable block on the front tile, and do panning. - The first rifts are shorter, with ~10 gravel/sand/bony you will have enough. After that, you'll need 12 to 14 (panneable) blocks. I never got anything spawning inside this "pann-ick" room. It's boring, but safe and rewarding. I have also used this setup successfully: But it requires you to have a bucket (copper age). You do get more rusty gears, but you'll have to keep some spears for the killings (the fire in the middle doesn't work that well).
