When the community remains calm, there's not a need for strict moderation, because most everyone is being civil and you don't have a bunch of wild speculation leading to fights and rumors. Just my two cents but this is a very slippery slope when said like that. Based on what I know of history, the side that has to justify things using language like "if only they were calm" or "we wouldn't have to do it if you just settled down" usually isn't remembered favorably. Regardless, not my rodeo so I'm content to watch things from the sidelines. However there is one thing that actually bothers me about the official response. It was posted to Reddit (and probably Discord) but not the official forums. It says to me that they want to calm down the loudest in the places that have the most reach, not their core fans that use their official forums. It should have been posted here first or at least at the exact same time. It's the main thing that has me wary since that's like PR 101, post official responses in all places and don't forget your own official forums. 3

kosan Posted September 3 Report Posted September 3 34 minutes ago, Diff said: I could really reflect your request for half-reasonable claims here... These are not at all similar situations. NPM, PyPi, and Go are the exact same story as the ModDB. Entirely unreviewed. By anyone except the users. Go is especially egregious to include because it doesn't even have a centralized repository of any kind, you can upload to any public URL on the entire internet as long as it responds the way the Go expects. I think it's a special header or a query parameter or something. Linux distros are a closer analogy to this, and there are instances of maintainers going evil. But in the instances I'm aware of, they were trusted maintainers who didn't get their contributions reviewed at all, so we're back to being unreviewed here. We're not talking about the ModDB, which Maltiez is no longer present on. We're talking about the main VS codebase. Every line of code that gets submitted to VS gets reviewed by Tyron. These are flatly not the same situations, so yes, a one-person validation turns it into "no-chance" by virtue of it being a binary difference between "completely unreviewed" and "reviewed by a minimum of one person but sometimes more." How are you going to smuggle "accidentally" setting ClientMain to null past anyone with functioning eyes, let alone eyes that are scanning for multiple criteria? There is also the concern that the single person reviewing his code now has minimized the scope and impact of what was done - not once in the official statement was it outright stated that Anego considers distributing effectively malicious, hidden, obfuscated code as unacceptable, unprofessional, or otherwise a bad thing(tm) - instead it fully deflects the issue and weaves a story where the intent was to prevent cheating, and nobody else was affected (which is known to be false). The only thing I get from the statement is that the only problem here is that he was caught. So effectively, the fact that his code is reviewed before submission by someone who, as far as I can see, agrees with the sentiment that "the end justifies the means" is of no salvation to me. Further compounding my concerns about Maltiez in this situation is that, in my experience, modders that feel slighted by the community or other devs/modders have been known to escalate their retaliation, not reduce or reform. Especially when the person in question feels they were right, and did the right thing - regardless of what others think, which Maltiez has made clear a few times. 14
icesharkk Posted September 3 Report Posted September 3 I am severely disappointed with Tyron's response. He spent 1/3 of his statement justifying the actions against the cheat dev, 0% of it is accountability for the impacted collateral damage, plans to continue employing the malware dev. that's it folks. I cannot with integrity fight back against the popular sentiment of "malware story". i hope the door hits my ass on the way out. the only good thing is that maltiez's loses access to moddb and his mods will be transferred to custodianship other than maltiez. The latter doesn't matter the community already forked the code. that's a nothingburger solution. The former is good because we cant trust maltiez. unfortunately he is being retained to contribute on the base game but with oversight. Removing people who break our community rules. Self community moderation and building. Not vigilantism. This is probably one of the things that enrage me the most about this whole debacle. Maltiez justified their blatant disregard of both the community and the developers with the need to supposedly "protect game servers from cheaters" (even tho they themselves admitted of doing it more to mess with specific people rather than to protect the community at large) with something that is essentially incapable of actually doing that because it sets a delay between detection and repercussion, something that is reasonable to do in anticheats but that is fundamentally ineffective as an anti griefing measure since it leaves ample time to the cheater to do whatever they want with their cheats. As always community servers need to focus on the actual solution to this kind of issues, which is building a solid community that is self immunizing against problematic individuals. Maltiez essentially pushed malware down our throat because they thought they knew better and when it was made clear to them that what they did was having consequences outside of the intended scope, and not in a good way, their reaction was to feign superiority while throwing mod authors under the bus and calling the community toxic. And Anego chose to keep this person within their dev team. And somehow we should be fine with that? No thanks. Edited September 4 by KekkusMaximus 16 3

Diff Posted September 4 Report Posted September 4 (edited) I also wish the false positives had been mentioned. In truth, we don't know how widespread these false positives were. Mods are third-party code of unknown quality, and mods do just crash. Null Reference Exceptions in particular are the classic mystery meat crash, and they're the kind of crash that ConfigLib provoked. We do have at least one confirmed case of a mod caught in the crossfire, Caves N Caverns, due to it obfuscating its code. Speculating a touch, if CNC's 1000 downloads were enough to blow the lid off this, it does suggest that false positives were not common... But I feel that's the limit on how far you can reasonably minimize this issue. Ultimately, we don't know how widespread the false positives really were, and that itself is part of the problem. In a vacuum of information, a lot of crashes are now getting pinned on ConfigLib. Is it true? Were these crashes also mixed with random game inputs and disconnects, all consistently between 2-9 minutes after assets loaded? We don't know. Nobody that's claiming ConfigLib kicked their cat is going that far into depth with it. And the announcement only continues that vacuum of information. I'm personally fine overall with the VS team's current path forward, but that's the complaint I have with the announcement. Edited September 4 by Diff 4
IAmMoss Posted September 4 Report Posted September 4 I think Tyron's response is fine. they aren't public relations experts, and im going to give the benefit of the doubt and say he just forgot to add details, as i still trust the dev team. I don't think he was justifying maltiez's actions. He very clearly called his actions foolish. Hes also leaving the community nearly in every way as well as will be heavily scrutinized, which is fair in my eyes. In regards to maltiez, i honestly can't say i'm surprised. He's a very sanctimonious person and absolutely does not care about what any one else thinks, refuses to answer honest questions, etc, etc. if his current mods are safe to use then the past is the past. They are great mods, and i hope they are kept at least functional by the dev team, or whoever they decide to hand them off too. That being said, at least temp banishment from the community is fair. I hope maybe one day he stops and realizes he was in the wrong. 3 2

I'm personally fine overall with the VS team's current path forward, but that's the complaint I have with the announcement. This is what's bothering me. There's at least one highly upvoted comment in the reddit announcement blaming ConfigLib for crashes they allegedly spent hours debugging, but other users pointed out that the crashing behavior they described could not have been caused by ConfigLib. All we have to go on to understand the scope of the collateral damage here is guesswork based on a combination of crude statistics (very few downloads for confirmed conflicting mods, a long time between the malware going in and anyone connecting it to a legitimate mod crashing) and the host of people operating entirely on vibes, blaming ConfigLib for any crash they don't currently have a good explanation for. Some people erroneously blaming ConfigLib for crashes it didn't cause is totally unsurprising: mods causing crashes is a fairly common occurrence especially with the huge modlists many folks run with, and crashes are frustrating things that can be very difficult to debug. It's possible that ConfigLib actually did cause some real damage ("bricking" saves, for example) to innocent users, which would justify some of the vitriol flying around. My suspicion is that this alleged damage is being harped on specifically to justify the rage folks were already feeling, not because of any strong evidence that it happened, but I have no way to know for sure. 6

There's just a big difference between politely raising concerns and starting fights with those who don't hold the same opinion on the matter. In other words, it's perfectly fine to criticize Anego Studios and express frustration, and one can be calm/civil while expressing such. What's not okay is running around whipping the community into a frenzy, starting fights with other users, and generally being abusive towards those you don't like/disagree with. And based on my general experience and observations, that tends to be why the ban hammer comes down. Tensions run high, people don't think clearly, and some outright break the rules and don't care.

Hadn't seen that one floating around, but your gut feeling is right. To accidentally corrupt a save, just crash mid-save... But AdditionalStuff.cs only crashes in multiplayer games, where the client isn't the one handling saving at all. And the same line that bails out on single-player games also bails out if it's not running on the client side. No accidental save corruption should be possible. 4

He is not and has never been capable of merging code into main directly. As one of the server owners affected by this (you can see my crash report in the Radio mod, one of the confirmed affected mods, here), what I would like to see is at least official acknowledgement of the false positives and an apology for the lost troubleshooting time, as well as potential risk of lost world progress, given how the crashes kept happening for hours even after uninstalling the radio. Not because of any world corruption of course, but in the case I had needed to restore a server backup (luckily it didn't come down to this). It is understandable Maltiez may not be terminated of his employment due to local labor laws or the nature of his contract with Anego, which I am clueless about. In any case, I would also love if measures were taken to make the moddb safer, by (1) making it mandatory for all mods to be open source and (2) using checksums to make sure the compiled binaries uploaded to moddb are the same as the ones compiled from the provided source code. In any case, I trust Anego's code review and approval process and I have no concerns about this sort of thing happening in the VS vanilla code. 10

The only thing i could really expect to happen is maybe another post about the people effected "we are sorry about your servers crashing blah blah blah" the current response is just kinda "here is what happened here is what we are doing". some people want nothing short of a humiliation ritual so it wont appease anyone but it could help those who spent hours trying to debug their servers to at least know the team at least sympathies with whats happened. the question people should ask themselves is if this had happened before maltiez was hired do you think any dev studio, including Anego, would have hired him knowing the illegal thing he did to their user base and that he is already banned from their moddb in perpetuity.
