rkjessery Posted March 3, 2025 Report Posted March 3, 2025 (edited) This week of play, has been so frustrating and just flat out boring. i've put 86* hours in so far, and can say this is a 2/10 game. I started to type a good and bad list, and it turned into more of a "wow I actually hate this game" thing so ima just delete that whole thing. and now this is happening. Games got potential but its also got extremely stupid pointlessly grindy aspects that drag out so long the sense of accomplishment feels more like "wow... all that for 15 leather" The combat, mobs, holes in the ground, terrain generation, day/night cycle. they all suck just the worst kinda suck. Crafting and smithing stuff is cool af. Remove the monsters, those are dumb, and make a better home set system if you don't want beds to be the spawn. The gear is a stupid home system, and limited respawns is also... why? you get those dumb gears constantly from the little rock throwing jerks. Make the stupid thing close those portals or something. honestly my biggest hatred for this game has been the holes in the ground. You see youtube clips and crap but no one says anything about the 1x2 holes that drop 60 blocks and you lose your crap forever. I got 3 copies for my friends, they lost interest for pretty much the same reasons. The whole discord call sessions were just rage induced swear words, and blasphemy's against this game. I don't want a refund or expect one. I still support the devs. I understand you can make shit sometimes. Its ok. you'll learn maybe. Idk. Idc. This night cycle is almost over, now im gonna try and make some padded armor so i can go hunt for fkn marble or chalk or limestone for the 400th time. don't wish me luck. I'm not gonna be happy when I find it anyway. Edited March 3, 2025 by rkjessery 2 5 2 1 3 1
Ceepert Posted March 3, 2025 Report Posted March 3, 2025 I feel like you just dont like this sort of game, not that the game is bad. It definetly has some grindy aspecs that imo need to be adjusted a bit, like not being able to make a bow because you need flax unless you play the hunters class. But in most other areas its just immersion over all. Yes leather is a bitch to make, cause when an animal dies it doesnt just shed its skin, ready to be made into clothing. Not sure what your world settings were but 1x2 holes are ... not a thing? There a chasms sure, but those are like 5-7 blocks wide ususally. Also there is likea fuckton of mods that literally do all that you asked for, bed respawn, no mobs and so on. This is not a "lets progress as fast as possible through the game to get cool engame stuff" like you are playing most Minecraft Modpacks, this game is literally the saying "The journey is the destination" I also tried to get a friend to play the game and he didnt like it either, not for the reasons you gave but his view was "why even progress" because "progress" is not making diamond tools and building a automated factory, its ... not starving, having a home, preparing for winter, the journeys to story locations. Its not a bad game, its just a nieche taste. Funily enough I would put it in a similar category to stardew valley. Not because of difficulty or anything like that (of course) but both have questionable reasons for progression. Like in stardew you farm, to make money to farm better and faster to make even more money. But its the vibe of making your own farm and shit that makes it popular. Here imo its the slow build of your encampment, going from barely having a dirt shack to your first log cabine to the point where you can propperly get stone and planks to make an actual house. 4
Daev Posted March 3, 2025 Report Posted March 3, 2025 Agreed, some of the grinds could be better implemented/polished, however it sounds more like you don't like this kind of game. You are pointing to core gameplay mechanics and progression systems as the source of your anger (most of which can be tweaked by world gen settings or mods, such as monster and rift spawns.) @Ceepert already spoke on that though very well. This is a game about the journey itself and not getting to super mega awesome endgame gear and you would probably benefit from a different game. I do encourage you to try some mods though, you don't even need a zip software necessarily, it's a drag and drop system. Also definitely try messing with some of the world gen settings and ask around the forums and discord for some advice. Vintage Story is certainly not for everyone (I bought two keys for my friends to play and they have both played exactly once with me, which is fine because I understand that MC is more their speed) that being said I do hope it grows on you because it is such a chill and gratifying experience. 2
quihyr Posted March 3, 2025 Report Posted March 3, 2025 The first time I stumbles on this game and played it, I died so many times not knowing what to do. Trying to craft and survive like in Minecraft and expecting it to be the same. Then I quit, cause it wasn't... I didn't understand how to play. And that's fine. Years later I came back to Vintage Story, took some time to learn how to play, what the mechanics are. Watched some video's on YouTube. Learning about mods, and how to create a world to my specific tastes. Now I am pretty certain I'll love this game forever, and I highly respect the devs for their hard work and dedication. And their vision of the game, the story. I enjoy the "grind," and a lot of the functions adds realistic immersion. (Like the forging, amazing! ) Though I do agree that some aspects need some finetuning. I always crank up surface ore, cause I cannot be bothered to spend 4+ hours looking for copper bits. But that's just it, the game isn't done. It's a work in progress.. And just like the gameplay, I'm here for the journey! 4
lmfao Posted March 3, 2025 Report Posted March 3, 2025 its okay to use the settings to make things easier for you. you can give yourself more health, disable monsters completely, have inventory stay on you after death, use creative mode to give yourself temporal gears to set your spawn whenever, etc. theres so much you can edit to make it more enjoyable for the play style you want. 4
Zane Mordien Posted March 3, 2025 Report Posted March 3, 2025 Grindy? I guess that depends on your point of reference. This is just not a high action game like Conan or something. If you want grindy try out Wurm. That game takes the grind and then doubles down on it.
Michael Gates Posted March 3, 2025 Report Posted March 3, 2025 Bye! Have a great time playing... what DO the youths play, these days? Is it that newfangled "Monkey Island" thing? I could never understand that one, such a complicated user interface. 1
Maelstrom Posted March 3, 2025 Report Posted March 3, 2025 I just don't get it. If the game stinks so badly, why take all the time to post all the hate? Why not just quietly leave? Orrrrr, does the poster actually want the game to be better and just expressing it poorly? 1

There's nothing like getting out a soapbox in the public square and having a good rant, even if no one cares to listen. Otherwise, I dunno. 15 minutes ago, Maelstrom said: Orrrrr, does the poster actually want the game to be better and just expressing it poorly? Probably this. The game isn't want they want to be, and they expressed their thoughts as much...poorly. Not the first time it's happened, probably won't be the last. In any case, I agree with what others here have already said--the game doesn't seem to be to OP's liking, and that's okay. It has a steep learning curve with a lot of complexity, which is a turn off for several. For those who end up sticking with it, or picking it back up later, there are several game settings that can be tweaked to achieve gameplay more to one's liking(keep inventory on death, different kinds of terrain, temporal storms on/off, no monsters/lore content, etc). And if the vanilla settings themselves aren't enough, there's a plethora of mods that can further alter things, and it's also fairly simple to jump in and create a mod of your own as well. 3

Would love to see your list even if it is just a long list of bads. I think we could have a productive discussion on how items on the list could be fixed either currently in the settings, in the future by the developers, or by the good graces of a mod developer for items that dont fit into the other categories. You seem to be interested in making the game better otherwise you wouldn't of spent the time to rant your issues on the forums. 1
Cetasaya Posted March 4, 2025 Report Posted March 4, 2025 Rolling up to a game's forum just to bash and vent on it and not responding to anyone's questions or support is a choice I must say. Usually when I dislike a game I say, "eh. not for me." and move on with my life. Not, "This game sucks. This game is bad." type garbage. There's a massive canyon's difference between, "Product isn't for me" and "Bad product" And if you're OLD enough to type and use the internet, you should be MATURE enough to know the difference. Your whole rant is just downright bizzare, too. You wanna vent and insist people NOT "wish you luck" (why would we????) AND you wanna lecture a dev that has made an extremely successful niche game without a publisher and isnt on steam or any consoles????? Really? You know better than devs that have stomped out games that have 100x the staff, resources, AND marketing with just word of mouth alone???? Now I know why you fall down so many holes... Look out everybody, HoleTumbler here's got some real top mind level critiques. "Monsters dumb" God D@MN why didnt they consider that 'monsters dumb'?

That is not a thing, anyone can make a bow, and anyone can also purchase a recurve bow from a survival goods trader. It is like how any class can repair clothing with linen, not just Tailor. Unless you meant crude bow specifically, but I've found that basic flint spears are better than a crude bow anyways, so it hasn't really been an issue for me. Edited March 4, 2025 by ifoz 2

Tyron Posted March 4, 2025 Report Posted March 4, 2025 I don't think this will lead to a productive conversation about the games pros and cons, so I'll go ahead and lock this. 8 1
