As the 1.22 pre-releases are getting more polished, I did some testing playthrough (to the iron age), and thinking about preparation steps in my long-term world, that started in version 1.19. The actual plan is:

  • to check a wind farm: either to extend distance of particular windmills to 15 blocks to prevent turbulence, or just prepare for 2 big windmills instead of actual 4 small ones.
  • to reconsider disposition of a smithy, as the actual room is pretty tight and there is actually not much space for bellows.
  • to find an appropriate place, where rapids for waterwheel can be placed. As the world is fully explored at least 2000 blocks in all directions, I do not feel it cheating. Also, I do not intend to put the rapids just next to my smithy, good spot needs to feel realistic. So now I consider to find nice place in a hillside of nearby mountains, next to a lake, in a distance 100-200 blocks from the actual base.
    • This allows to build the new smithy and industry hub there, which will actually make sense as the actual base is a castle, where the industry is 1) very confined, 2) rather inappropriate. So, maybe, I just keep like one helve hammer in the old smithy and move the rest and rebuild anew and in bigger scale...
  • to find all raw fat stored in various places and put it into the cellar until it is boiled.
  • to enlarge fields to compensate for decreased grain gains.
  • to prepare lots of nails to make new furniture (as the smithing may be less effective in the next version). I am a bit happy that I was too lazy to make detailing in all interiors of the castle. Now it will be great for new cabinets to furnish all half-empty castle rooms.

Is there anything else you recommend? What will be your preparations?

I am actually serious here. 😂 I don't intend to delete the worlds immediately, and might hang on to one purely for story testing purposes. However, for me it's about time for a fresh start, and I'd like to take full advantage of the new trader huts and berry bushes and whatnot rather than need to explore for miles to find said stuff. Fresh starts are also fun because not only is the scenery different, but I have a chance to correct mistakes I made in the previous world, as well as make plenty of new ones while playing.

Same, just hoping I stay motivated to play, I get burned out by winter, not because of winter itself, but the constant back and forth in a small area.

can’t wait to play when 1.22 though, in the mean time my dad gotten into the other block, and that’s been fun to play with him, though survival (to me) is a joke, unless I willingly do something stupid, as well with progression, just wow, found 42 diamond ore and all I had to do was run past all the slow enemies, so I just gave them all to my dad asides from some for tools.

honestly progression in vintage story as well can be a joke, so next time around I’m gonna nerf the prospecting pickaxe since strip mining has little risk compared to caving asides not getting saltpeter, and maybe I’ll make that bar this time around. A nice spot near a end of a river (if they add that) by the ocean, spending all my flax on a boat instead of a windmill again.

not related question but can you even shift add items in crates on a boat like you can on land or no, I had to move hundreds of stones one at time a while ago, not fun.

Ctrl + shift + right-click should add the entire item stack to the crate in question.

You should be fine. Wintertime hasn't changed that much, as far as I can tell, however the smithing process is a lot more fun. To get really good tools and weapons, you'll need to spend quite a bit of time at the forge, and winter is the perfect time for that. The forge will keep you warm, and the smithing process will keep you occupied until the weather is better for other tasks.

I wish there was a "place every matching item in your inventory" button. I find myself placing a dozen stacks of dirt into a crate on a regular basis and it feels so tedious.

I've been doing a ton of work in my creative world to plan things out. Not doing the full builds but practicing the techniques, setting up my personal goals, and working out the scale of things I want to be doing, since I want to try and make this my forever world. (closest I've had so far is my 600 hour world, lol)

But there's also been a lot of testing for world generation. Mostly because I want to make something that doesn't have giant continents, because I want to encourage myself to get boats going), but also to have the space to actually make what I want to make and allow for a level of areas being no-go because of temporal stability. Think I nailed a sweet spot at about 10% land mass to 90% ocean. Which is still a LOT bigger than my previous 0% landmass runs.

So it's come down to 1) big islands (big enough that an elk would be quite helpful, but not mandatory), and 2) I'm gonna need LOTS of blue clay, since that works into my whole main castle town's aesthetic.

I'm also watching a lot of documentaries & tracking down source material as reference. Because I'm going absolutely history nerd mode on this run, but still looking at having the whimsy.

Speaking of 1.22 prep, is there a way to run /wgen regen ## to *exclude* a certain number of chunks around you?

Would be very useful to leave your immediate area untouched, but still regen everything else.

Not possible as far as I know. A much more useful command for that purpose is often /db prune, though I'm not certain about the details of its usage. The command handbook (accessible from the pause menu in creative mode) may be of use, if you're ever wondering about what a command does and what arguments it takes. Strongly recommend to make a backup before you try it and carefully check whether you're satisfied with the results afterwards.

I just tried this and it didn't work. This for crates that are on land, not on boats, you can only shift + right click or just right click to take items out one at a time. I think, ctrl + right click to mass take/put in items is overridden by taking create/chests off/on the ship, which uses the same button presses.
This should probably be it own question at this rate, sorry this is unrelated to long term worlds.

Same, but for a diff reason. I've only ever played 30 day months. and man, winter is loooooooooong.

Good for at home renovation projects and close-to-home mining.

I hecking love winter in VS, and I do 30 day months too so I know the slog. But I tell you what, I ain't doing another snowball earth run. There's such a thing as too much winter, lol.

Prepping for a new world I definitely think should include some level of "given the amount of winter this area is likely to have, do I have enough in my plans to keep me occupied that whole time?" Not just food stocks but stuff to keep your mind occupied, especially if you play long months. So I usually leave a lot of stuff that's not so important (like sorting, decorating, sifting bony soil...etc) till the snow starts falling.

Honestly it only takes a few minutes to sprint thousands of blocks away to freshly generated areas!

I agree it doesn't take long to get to fresh ground (though certainly not a few minutes -- that's all thoroughly explored) but misses the point, that is, to start over, and use what you know now to make a better start.

I also tend to play with very small landmasses (between 0-10%), so if I start up and there's nothing decently viable then a full restart is a heck of a lot less time lost than trying to get from island to island trying to find something. But then I also do wilderness settings so a few quick death-respawns will usually land me on a solid selection of nearby landmasses to check out.

I think everyone's approach is going to be different in what they choose based on how they play the game.

My only change from previous worlds is to have a workshop that is going to have max power.   So that will be a windmill above 200 (I play 320 block world height so higher sea level) that is close to a rapids water block.  Fortunately, my first test world generated a delightful world.  We'll see if it breaks when it goes to stable release.

I just started a new world with colder generation, I think I'm gonna be fine just upgrading to 1.22. Also its like, 60% landmass? So the new chunks will probably blend well with the existing world, since there's so much sea.

Delete button as well. I like my world, and will probably make a lil montage of everyone's different towns and settlements. But starting over is exciting, its just going to be waiting for the mods to update.

Not for 1.22 as such but for moving to a new world because old world gen has broken ~ finding all the local fire clay and stockpiling it because the world is old enough to have it as a common spawn along with all the salt i can get from the Dome not far from home.

Depends on how easy the bug-swatting process goes. The trailer's up on YouTube so I would say maybe a couple weeks, but quite a lot of changes are getting added with 1.22 and there's a lot of bugs that need fixing, so it could be longer.
