Hi,
I want to share an issue with stuttering I have been having in Vintage Story. Please do share any help or similar experiences or commiseration.

Problem Description:
The stutter occurs at least once every few seconds. Sometimes more frequent, sometimes less frequent. Occasionally, the stutter is intense, like a short "hitch" or freeze where the framerate drops to zero. Usually it's more like a micro-stutter making the game feel noticeably unsmooth.
The problem seems to persist no matter what I change in the graphics settings. From very low to very high settings.
When looking at the task manager, the system is nowhere close to fully utilizing CPU/RAM/GPU resources. So I don't think it is a resource bottleneck. With the game active, CPU utilization sits around 2%-10%. GPU util sits around 40%. Disk util sits around 2%. Memory usage sits around 40%. It seems to use 1-2 GB of GPU Memory.
The issue is not related to terrain generation, as the stutter occurs in already generated areas.
The stutter may be slightly less intense when underground mining, or when I am not moving the player character or camera around. And it is somewhat worse above ground when moving the player character and camera around.
The stutter exists when playing vanilla, no mods.
The stutter issue exists in multiple versions of the game. I tested the latest release candidate (1.22 rc7) and the last stable release version (1.21.6). So, I don't think the issue is related to a particular game update.
The problem does not appear to get any worse or better the longer the program runs.
I don't think I had this problem a week or two ago. I remember the game running totally smooth, even with a long view distance setting. So I am thinking something may have changed on my PC sometime in the last week or so.
My game stuttering looks pretty similar to this issue I found on the GitHub https://github.com/anegostudios/VintageStory-Issues/issues/8139

System Specs:
display: 1080p 144hz monitor (and 60hz secondary monitor)
gpu: 9060xt
cpu: 7800x3d
ram: 32gb
storage: 1tb ssd
os: windows 11

I attempted many fixes based on suggestions found online:

Things I have tried in Vintage Story itself:

  1. Switching between fullscreen and borderless
  2. Enabling and disabling vsync (on, on+sleep, off)
  3. Setting limited framerate
  4. Enabling and disabling minimap
  5. Enabling and disabling  Optimize Ram setting via the config file
  6. Enabling and disabling Dynamic Color Grading
  7. Deleting game files and reinstalling Vintage Story
  8. Tried different versions of Vintage Story (1.21.6 and 1.22 rc7)
  9. Enabling and disabling SSBOs with "cf allowSSBOs off"
  10. Changed mouse sensitivity
  11. Tried running VintageStoryServer.exe and connecting to it with the client separately
  12. Tested on multiple worlds

Things I have tried outside of Vintage Story:

  1. Enabling and disabling freesync and enhanced sync
  2. Disabling Vsync in game and setting Vsync to Always On in Adrenalin settings
  3. Disabling windows Game Mode
  4. Disabling Game Bar
  5. Closed all other applications (discord, browser, etc)
  6. Increasing and decreasing mouse polling rate (tested from 100 to 1000)
  7. Tried a different mouse
  8. Enabling and disabling Smart Access Memory (rebar) in BIOS
  9. Enabling and disabling Core Isolation
  10. Enabling and disabling and C-states in BIOS
  11. Changing refresh rate on monitor
  12. Turning off second monitor
  13. Turning on "Show only 1" monitor in windows display settings
  14. Unplugging second monitor
  15. Setting a frame rate target in adrenalin software
  16. Clearing the shader cache in adrenalin software
  17. Reinstalling graphics drivers (without first uninstalling them)
  18. Uninstalling then reinstalling graphics drivers
  19. Downgrading to an older version of graphics drivers 26.3.1->26.2.2
  20. Enabling and disabling Optimizations for windowed games in windows settings
  21. Enabling and disabling Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling in windows settings
  22. Tried looking for stuttering in other games and did not notice any
  23. Tried running userbenchmark to look for any obvious issues with cpu/gpu/ram/ssd
  24. Disabling Adrenalin in-game overlay
  25. Unplugged non-essential peripherals
  26. Enabling and disabling Bluetooth in windows settings and device manager
  27. Tried "Default" and "Favor Performance" in Adrenalin settings Performance->Tuning->GPU->Tuning Presets
  28. Made sure that the GPU is using AMD driver in device manager
  29. Made sure EXPO is enabled in BIOS
  30. Enabling and disabling integrated graphics in device manager
  31. Applied recommended windows settings in OOSU10
  32. Made sure hardware is not overheating

In about a month, I hope to replace windows with linux on my pc. So hopefully that fixes the issue if nothing else can.

I used to have weaker PC and the only time I notice any stutters or freeze ups is while using certain mods. Better ruins for instance will literally freeze up the computer for a few seconds while a large ruin is loaded into the world.

Also, the game does run smoother on Linux. I had just regular Mint installed on a very low end PC (AMD RX550 GPU) for a while and I did notice a difference in performance. I can't remember the exact numbers I do know it was about a 10 FPS increase. Which wasn't bad, considering it was somewhere below 30 FPS on windows.

I have similar specs and I have had similar issues. Wondering if it's something with AMD CPUs? I have noticed that, though I still have stutters, it noticeably less with a vanilla game than with mods so something to do with RAM? I am by no means a computer scientist/programmer so not sure how accurate that could be.

Definitely will follow the thread in case someone has found a solution!

If anything I think it's AMD GPUs. Because on my actual gaming PC with a Ryzen 5 5600x and an RTX 3060ti, 16GB system RAM I never had any stutters. Or freeze ups.

I also play on an ROG Ally and it will lock up for a few seconds regularly when exploring. And also, while running through the woods, FPS drops to around 22 or so, from a solid 30 while in a field.

I also have an AMD CPU and do experience some stuttering.  Turning down the frame rate made it less noticeable, but was certainly not a complete fix. This has been a topic for a while now so I'm hopeful they fix it!

I think it might be. I have AMD hardware and encountered some weird shuddering in 1.21 with Vsync enabled, especially in forested regions. I've also seen other AMD users reporting similar issues.

That being said, those issues don't seem to be present for me in 1.22. I've been able to play the vanilla game at the default High settings with Vsync enabled without problems.

Major recent stuttering I’ve noticed is that of the chat moving on servers. I’ll note that I use RTSS to limit and sync my framerate in vintagestory. This is partly because the vs vsync option greatly lowers my fps, partly because it doesn’t make the game much smoother.

I've got an all AMD system as well and I’ve definitely seen such stutters before, but I don’t think I have them at current. Perhaps due to my use of RTSS, perhaps some other change on my pc.

An update to the original post, I tried a couple more settings:
1. Tried enabling and disabling Gaming Mode in BIOS
2. Tried changing PBO setting in BIOS
3. Tried updating game version to 1.22 rc8
No change, the game is still badly stuttering.

Try CTRL+F10 to open the tick profiller and see if there's something that jumps out as a big sum of time when the spikes happen (you may need to have your screen recording because things show in real time and may be to fast to easily read -- not sure if this info shows up differently in other places or is stored to file)

@OldManYells Thanks for the suggestion! I had not tried using the tick profiler.
I had the player character run around in game for several minutes while watching the fps graph and tick profiler with extended debug info enabled. I don't understand everything in the tick profiler, but what I noticed is that each tick took about 6.8ms. I didn't notice any slow ticks. And I didn't notice any correlation between the stutters and anything happening in the tick profiler.

As nobody has shared this link yet, I feel I should...https://wiki.vintagestory.at/index.php/Framerate_and_Performance

Although for me I've seen an increase in performance for 1.22. Admittedly I am running it vanilla, whereas 1.21 was played with mods (not a lot, but some), so that could be the performance increase.

Shadows, anti-alias, and render distance would be the settings I'd be change if I was suffering.

I have gotten sporadic stuttering since updating to 1.22. Had no issues in 1.21 with a small handful of mods. Running Ryzen 7 9800X3D with 9070 XT and 32GB RAM. I'm wondering if it's something about world generation because I usually notice it when I'm traveling. If I stand still for a minute or so it goes away.
