Doesn't need a booster, but it certainly needs to be far more efficient to justify taking up a backpack slot. As it is right now, you just drop like a rock after a short distance of gliding. People said it's good for dropping long distances, but a water bucket is far cheaper and more reliable.

I think the better course of action would be to add some sort of flying machine for the player to build and keep fueled/maintain, whether that be a hot air balloon, simple airship, or simple airplane. Granted, I also think flying machines are a bit outside the scope of the game, but if flight is intended to be a legitimate method of player travel over long distances, the player should need to invest a lot more into it.

Flight is, after all, a very powerful ability, and while Minecraft's elytra is very fun to use...it's also a source of the game's wonky balance. Acquiring one can take a bit of work, but once the player has an elytra, it's very easy to maintain with Mending and Unbreaking III. Sugar cane can be easily farmed for paper, and it's also not hard to build a basic mob grinder for gunpowder or otherwise hunt creepers with a Looting III weapon.

For Vintage Story though, I expect travel to remain more...grounded. Mounts, railroads potentially, and maybe even teleporters as a very late game investment. The glider will probably remain a niche item; useful for covering short distances or avoiding what would otherwise be lethal falls, but not something intended to be used for conventional travel.

I definitely don't think a generally usable booster should be implemented, but I think there could be a way to implement a booster with enough limitations, that it wouldn't be overpowered.

My idea would be to make this booster a block that would launch you upwards. This way, the booster would be limited to the spot you place it in. You couldn't use it and also take it with you, and you also couldn't use it while in the air. If the block is pricey enough to make (e.g.: requiring jonas parts) you also couldn't just use them for general purpose travel.
This booster could then be used to quickly reach areas close to your base with the glider, (You would still need to walk back home, though) without trivializing large scale travel.
If you're willing to invest a lot of time grinding the materials, you could build enough boosters to cover larger distances, too. That would likely not be feasible in singleplayer, though.

I think this would be a decently well-balanced addition. Particularly since you can achieve the same thing (albeit with a slower ascent) with just soil and ladders. It would just be a faster (endgame) method to get height, without requiring a very tall pillar in your base.

Pretty sure it is primarily meant to be a parachute for the tower.

The problem with any of those booster ideas is that it inherently would kill any other means of transportation, just like in MC with the elytra, which was one of the worst additions to that game.

I do not know what this mechanic is but I will say this. Minecraft has a flyer, Colony Survival has a flyer. Maybe its time for developers to not copy each other.

My personal key pet peeve is 'why does every friggin building game ever have to have some kind of monsters coming at you at night while your working on your base?' ALL of them. why?

Only for the tower? Again, it needs a better justification for taking up an entire backpack slot. It just doesn't have any more utility than a water bucket. //media.invisioncic.com/r268468/emoticons/unsure.png

Speaking of flying machines, apparently that's a mod now: https://mods.vintagestory.at/vsairshipmod

Thank you for posting the link! I hope everyone has been enjoying it a lot!
I came to this thread to potentially discuss about ways to help Gliders be more useful without making them outshine every other mode of travel! I've made an entirely creative-mode built one in the form of a tethered balloon! It was originally intended to be one of the airshipmod's features but now I'm actually considering making it into something. I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts about it! I'll check the forums very rarely so if you want an immediate response from me I'm always around in my airships mod thread in the VS discord!

I will say, a good few translocaters can almost completely erase the need for a boat or even an elk, and there are always way more than expected within an area. the glider is more 'endgame' to get than that in my opinion, so i feel like it'd make sense for it to be at least somewhat stronger than it is- your backpack capacity is lowered, unlike when you use a boat or elk, so I just think it could go with being a bit easier to properly use.

the booster idea sounds like a cool mod, but I can't think of any mechanical suggestions that don't seem like too much. I just think it shouldn't drag you down quiiiite as fast.

Not totally against it, but I think falls more into modded territory or as a story dungeon reward for the post-steel age, gliders are a novelty first and foremost with Vintage Story since elks and boats serve as the main decently fast travel-tools for most of the game (and I suspect that is by design to encourage you to look around and slow down). I think I've only ever used the glider once, it's not bad for getting down mountains or hills in a pinch but rarely seems worth it

Welcome to the forums! Overall, I'm still inclined to say that proper flight is something that should be left to mods, with maybe a flight path or two as a story-specific event. I played around with the Draconis mod recently, and while I did have a lot of fun, it presents the same issue that the elytra has in Minecraft. Being able to just fly over obstacles and cover ground quickly means that land and water transport is obsolete. The only thing that competes with flight, in terms of travel, is translocators, but even then the teleport distance has to be very far in order for it to win over flight.

As for flight paths, a preset flight path would be okay, especially if it's a one-time story event. It would be something different and give the player some convenience for traveling to a specific place, without rendering all the other forms of travel in the game irrelevant.

We should also add craftable rockets you can propel yourself with! And little green guys that explode when you get too close to get the gunpowder for it!

Honestly what i want is for the glider to not suck ass.

Games that did gliding good are like Cube Worlds ALPHA and Superflight. If the devs modeled the physics of the glider after those games, it'd be a lot better. I'm not asking for air boosting bullshit, just physics that let you control the variables well, so you can choose to go less distance at a higher speed, or just glide long distances at a slow speed and just watch the hills roll by, something like that.

Crash Landing (legendary minecraft modpack) had a true glider mod that worked great. It was white outlined in red and you could just jump to use it, would take you maybe 5-7 blocks but was fun to use. Gliding was intuitive and made traversing over the barren landscape, jumping off structures and escaping monsters so much faster without being overpowered. Best glider experience I have ever had in any game. Would love to see the VS glider be fun and useful like that.

Something that just shoots you up into the air vertically (in lieu of building a vertical tower/staircase which would achieve the exact same results) kills any other means of transportation?  what even are the other means of transportation?  Boats and Elk?  Boats would still have utility in mass-cargo transport.

Also, isn't this kind of like complaining that steel tools kill every other tool?  That's part of progression: the stuff you used in the early game gets largely out-dated and made obsolete by the stuff you get in the mid or late game.

The problem with MineCraft's elytra is that for what, like almost 5 or 6 years we spent hundreds of hours building rail infrastructure and nether networks that were all made almost totally obsolete overnight with an addition no one could've seen coming.

To be blunt, i do not want an elytra-like mechanic in vintage story. Even my suggestion of a functional glider is pushing it.

You're not supposed to get things done quick in this game, not crafting, nor traversal.

Vintage story is a 'take in the sights and enjoy the journey' kinda game. Not a 'i need to get from A to B so i'll use the method that gets me there the fastest' game.

Well yes, yes it does. That's what rockets do for elytras in Minecraft, except rockets can go more directions than just up. If the player can easily fly everywhere, boats, elk, and other forms of ground transportation are rendered entirely obsolete, with teleporters being the only exception. I've experienced it myself by using the Draconis mod.

Incidentally, building a massive tower is also a major commitment in terms of both time and resources. I suppose one could make it an artifact, sure. However, if the artifact is cheap, then you have the elytra problem. If the artifact is expensive to obtain and has unlimited use, you still have the elytra problem, along with players complaining about how much they have to go through just to get something so powerful. If the artifact is expensive to obtain and has limited use, then it's not quite as bad as the elytra problem since it becomes a lot more of a niche use...but the problem remains of players complaining that the glider and associated artifact don't feel worth it to obtain, because they have such a niche use.

...it's really not.  4 stacks (and you could reclaim 1 of the stacks; it just helps build it faster) of dirt make a 64-tall tower in about 2 in-game hours (just did it in creative, set time to day (12:00), started building, finished at 14:08 or so.  And dirt is virtually infinite and almost trivial to gather.

You keep calling it the elytra problem.  The problem isn't the elytra at all.  It's the rockets.  Spammable, vectorable, cheap thrust.  That's the problem.  Not the glider.

The OP (at least as I read him) doesn't want something vectorable, just something to pop him straight vertically up in the air (something like Avian's Feather from WoW's WoD expansion).  So make it usable only while grounded and it's not spammable.  It doesn't need to be expensive or consumable as long as it's not vectorable and spammable.

And it *still* doesn't invalidate boats because when you're swimming, you're not grounded, and even if it did work while swimming (and it shouldn't), as I mentioned (and you summarily ignored) a sailboat can carry a mammoth amount of cargo.  Well more than you could tote in like what, four round trips using a glider (losing one of your bags)?  So yeah, sailboats not obsolete in the least.
