Hello again, everyone.

I've been on the hunt for bauxite and it feels like I'm stumbling around in the dark.

Are there any tips, tricks, or methods to share with hunting bauxite, or is it more of a "pick a direction and walk" process?

In my experience it's like any other stone type in the game (i.e. Granite, Limestone, etc.) where once you find a region with you you have all you need. In my own experience I often find it border regions with basalt, but that might just be coincidence.

Yes, I'd say picking a direction and just going is the best way, if you come across sandstone, limestone, conglomerate rock (sedimentary rock types) your search is getting 'warmer'.

Marking down rock types on the map is something I wish I started doing early on, it can be frustrating knowing you've seen that one rock you need somewhere but can't remember where and having to find it all over again.

There is a good chance that there is some exposed surface bauxite in a bauxite region, either as some orange sand/gravel or rock in cliff surfaces. If you are playing with the colored map, look for that.

If you are unlucky, you may travel 10000 blocks and not find any.

Bauxite is usually not subtle, you will often find a ton of the orange rock just exposed on the surface.  But as others have said, it can be very luck based.  Not much to say other than keep exploring.

In case you aren't aware of how the rock layers generate. Bauxite, as a sedimentary stone will always generate above any metamorphic or igneous rock type (except basalt which can spawn above sedimentary layers). If you're in a granite flat, keep going. However, multiple types of sedimentary stone can spawn on top of each other, I have found resources such as bauxite and limestone under something like sandstone, so if you're in an area with a sedimentary layer, poke a hole down to the igneous layer and see what else is there. You can also get an idea of the layers by looking at the cliff faces or mountains.

Usually by the time I need bauxite I have already explored at least 10k-15k blocks around my base, if I haven't revealed something I need by then I usually just start heading south as this is a trip I will likely plan to make anyways for new resources. Also, not a bad idea to check if there are any nearby areas with a sedimentary layer that haven't been fully explored yet.

It's typically a matter of just picking a direction and walking. However:

Go cave diving for ruins with a translocator. I've been able to reliably locate clumps of rare resources by hoping around like that.

Translocators are a very good way to cover a lot of ground rather quickly, if you happen to find a few.

Limestone, chalk, and slate can sometimes be good areas to look at well, as those are rock types that often appear alongside bauxite. It's no guarantee of finding bauxite, of course, but if there are convenient cliffs or caves around to check strata, it can't hurt to give it a shot.

However, if you're still having no luck, you might just turn your attention to a different task for a while. Iron is sufficient for completing the story, so you might consider working on story content(if lore is enabled) and see if you run across any bauxite in the process. Likewise, you might consider venturing to the tropics for some new scenery and goodies to bring home, and see if you stumble across a source of bauxite along the way.

Pretty much. It's very orange, hence easy to spot. Just pick a direction and go. U'll find it.

This too, ye. Story requires you to travel for thousands of blocks. 7k+ in our case. Treking to lazaret and archive took us through many, many biomes, a lot of which featured bauxite. So ye, just progressing is sufficient enough indeed. (We even found lime city, biome made entirely of limestone. :D)

There is this mod that can reveal the surface rock layer on the map, which I find very convinient.

The only thing that has worked well for me is running until I see it on the surface/mountains. Same for rock types for lime. In my pre release game I am playing now I ran 20,000 blocks before finding limestone. Now granted I ran straight south for other reasons as well but regardless of which direction it can take a long time to find a specific rock type.

In my current world, I explored everything within about two thousand squares of my house before I found bauxite. It was the top of one particular smallish high mountain, nowhere else. Went all around the base of it, no baux anywhere. Fine, ladder up and spend a day pickaxing.

Sometimes, stuff turns up in odd places.

What I'd add to @CastIronFabric's suggestion is to turn your view distance up as high as you and your hardware can tolerate. It's not that unusual IME to be able to see an outcrop with view distance of 1536 from atop a ladder wherever you build your base.

[EDIT]

I've never tried it, but from the description, the Farseer mod will let you see at distances your hardware cannot render.

If you use BetterEr prospecting, the stone search mode helps.
