Rosadon Posted March 2, 2025 Report Posted March 2, 2025 I made so much progress today. Finally got a saw. Replaced my dirt hut with wood. Expanded. Made a real bed, some shelves, a little cellar. Wanted to start leather stuff and realized I didn't have a jug. So I went to make a pit kiln to fire one. Which I always did by my house. My dirt house. My house was not dirt anymore. I. this was my first world. I might just restart. 1 4 2 6
Zane Mordien Posted March 3, 2025 Report Posted March 3, 2025 I always build from cobble for this reason.
HalfAxd Posted March 3, 2025 Report Posted March 3, 2025 Ouch! I'm curious if it burns storage baskets too... 1

Cetasaya Posted March 4, 2025 Report Posted March 4, 2025 Welcome to Vintage Story! Yuh I totally didnt catch myself on fire trying to stop my pit kilns from burning down the grasslands I settled in in front of my stepsis whom was the first person ever I played vintage story with and was trying to teach and mentor. Anybody who tells you that is a liar and a commie and a socialist. I never settle anywhere except inside a ruin when just starting out. Free and easily poppable by hand and fireproof stone blocks ready and waiting for the young and poor seraph. And if theyre aslar, theyre legitamtely beautiful too boot. Delicious delicious slate aslar blocks mmm.... It can be small but as long as its got enough blocks to build a mob proof two block high box its good enough. 1

We've all been there at some point. I learned about pit kiln fire spread by watching my wooden fences burn repeatedly. Figured out why they would burn down and made sure my pit kilns are at least a dozen blocks from any other buildings. Fortunately, these lessons were next to my cobblestone "cellar" attached to my forever home which was still under construction so I haven't lost any storage to fire... yet. 3
Ryan Thomas Posted March 5, 2025 Report Posted March 5, 2025 I don't know if the rules of the game'll change, but at least as of right now, if you want to save yourself a little heartbreak, I always put a little moat around those things. Charcoal pit: Pit kiln (please ignore the house, it's nowhere near finished): 3
xXx_Ape_xXx Posted March 5, 2025 Report Posted March 5, 2025 Been there, done that My first two or three worlds I ended up setting fire to something, either my house/hut or other infrastructure I had built close to the pit kilns All the fun of learning the games mechanics and quirks 1
Vratislav Posted March 5, 2025 Report Posted March 5, 2025 Yup, EVERYBODY has to burn something using pit kiln. In my fourth world, after like 400 hours of gameplay, I have decided that it is a good idea to make wooden gallery between pit kiln area and nearby bloomeries. The result was as you may suppose, at least my castle is made of stone, so the damage was only local. But if you want to play with fire, there is still a bug, that you can burn your bloomeries on a wooden pad without burning it.
Broccoli Clock Posted March 5, 2025 Report Posted March 5, 2025 Here's my tale of woe regarding fire. I had a pit kiln embedded into cobblestone, 2 blocks up and 1 across I had a wooden tool rack. I didn't think about it when I placed it, although I know pit kiln fire does spread. I couldn't figure out why my tools kept going missing, and what was happening was it would burn the rack but... that also destroys the tools at the same time!. I'd come back find an empty wall, think "Oh, I was going to put a tool rack there", place it, move tools over to it and a day later the process repeated itself. It was only when I came to put up the tool rack the 3rd time, cursing my ADHD for thinking about doing it before and not doing it (although, obvs, I had..), and looking for tools to fill it that I couldn't find them. I took me a good 10 minutes of running around the base, searching every storage container, every nook and cranny, that I had my epiphany. Moral of the story, even if you think it's far enough away, always move it further away. 4 1

I recently put a pit kiln 3 blocks from my pulverizer but then i got nervous and built a dirt wall between them. That was way to much to risk over a stupid fire. 1

I'm lucky the tools were all fairly low level, copper or bronze, but still you'd think that if the tool rack burnt the tools would drop on the ground, and what's worse is it takes just a second or two for it to be burnt. Blink and you'll miss it. I am sure you can conjure up the image of someone screaming into the screen, "where the f~ is that pickaxe! I know I made one, it can't just f~ vanish!" Never Jhonsen Posted March 5, 2025 Report Posted March 5, 2025 Ahh, pit kilns . .. no longer are the simple days of tossing your clay items into a firepit and calling it a day, now you have to make this fancy hole in the ground that can catch things on fire. I don’t think I’ve ever made a wildfire from a pit kiln, but in being there from the start, and knowing the dangers, I’ve always kept them isolated. I will say, I have used them as intentional garbage disposals. Throw junk items at one, they’ll burn away
